Christian Education Ministry
Lay Organization Shortly after approval of the General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church to allow the laymen to have such an organization, Bishop D. Ward Nichols, who presided over the Second Episcopal District and was an advocate of laymen involvement in church affairs, promoted the idea of expanding the organization in all local churches. Early on, the energetic members of Turner Memorial became aware of the actions of the General Conference and Bishop Nichols and came together to organize Turner's local Lay Organization. The purpose of the Lay Organization is to instill in the membership a love and appreciation of the rich history, traditions and principals of African Methodism, and to encourage support of the total program of the local church. The Lay Organization must continue to foster study which will provide greater knowledge and participation in the church.
The Literary Club (Library) The Literary Club was organized in the mid-fifties under the direction of Reverend I. A. Miller. The purpose of the Club is to see to it that the hymnals and Bibles are in good order and that there is always a sufficient supply. As one of its first projects, the Club engaged Brother Edward Harris to make the book holders that are now on the backs of Turner's pews. Brother Charles Green, the current President, attached the holders to the pews. Their goal is to always praise God from whom ALL blessing flow.
