Academic Ministries
College Ministry The College Ministry was founded by Sisters Arsena Strange and Lena Austin in February, 1992. The purpose of the organization is to provide support and a continual spiritual connection to students while away at college. Four times a year, students are sent care packages that include school supplies, snacks and a letter of encouragement from the Pastor. The College Ministry is involved in many facets of the church. They have sponsored "College Days" and "Homecoming" celebrations which have showcased many of the students who have been helped by the program and as well, once a year, they host one of our monthly prayer breakfasts. We like to think of ourselves as a Watch-Care Program, providing a home-away-from-home.Their goal is to obtain corporate funding in order to make the care packages more enjoyable and to sponsor workshops and other outreach programs for students.
Henry McNeal Turner Scholarship Program Started in 1984, The Henry McNeal Scholarship Fund provides financial support to high school graduates of Turner Memorial A. M. E. Church for continuing their education. Over the past eighteen years, more than one-hundred students have received Scholarships ranging from $100.00 to $1,000.00. The Program Officers are in the process of building an endowment fund so that the work can continue to be a source of financial help for future generations. In addition to financial assistance, the Scholarship Committee keeps in contact with recipients to ensure their physical and mental well-being and to let them know that their church family cares. This committee is always happy to have the participation of highly motivated, energetic people to be role models for the kind of excellence we want from our children.
The Joshua Ford Academic Tutorial Program The Joshua Ford Tutorial Program began on September 1, 2001. It is the vision of Pastor Walker to bring together volunteers to assist students who need assistance with their school subjects. Since its inception, parents, children and adults have enthusiastically embraced the program and are actually having fun relating to each other. The program is named in memory of one of the dedicated tutors who traveled from the Virginia suburbs to the inner city to be a mentor and a teacher. All who are involved in the program, and particularly the youth, mourned his tragic loss in 2002. The special bond that was created reflects in the fact that by naming this most valuable and needed effort for him, we honor his dedication and his life. The students who are in the program are showing great improvement. Others who are already doing well in their studies are finding the program to be a source of educational enrichment. The goal is to have the students continue to improve in their studies, rise to the top of their chosen fields, and return to give back to the community.
